Welcome
If you're here looking for HTML versions of my CAD lecture notes then you'll be disappointed. However, 52.225 Computer Architecture & Design follows closely the recommended course text written by the the most influential computer architects of the past two decades - David Patterson and John Hennessy.
I will endeavour to summarise each of my lectures in these pages. Where appropriate I'll also incorporate relevant links to related material. You should also be aware that what I write and report on in these pages is also considered to be examinable material.
At a tutorial in week 5 one of the students taking this class admitted that he learnt more from the book than from my lectures. He was apologetic. But he needn't have been. It's only natural that given the greater depth of coverage in the book and the opportunity to read/absorb it at their own pace that most students will find that they 'get it'. I am humble enough to admit that not everyone will like the pace, tone and approach of my lectures. Guess what!? That's why the book is essential reading. I'll attempt in my lectures, tutorials, postings, and web pages to highlight and summarise what I consider to the most important and relevant sections for the class.
Supplementary Lecture Material
From time to time I will use videos and newly published material to supplement the book. These will underline current ideas and themes in CAD. An example was the study of MMX and the MMX assignment I set for this class last year.
