Hypermedia and probabilistic retrieval

This paper discusses aspects of multimedia document bases and how access to documents held on a computer based system can be achieved. It discusses current access methods form multimedia document bases, in particular hypermedia and free text retrieval. Hypermedia systems provide access through browsing which is good for novice users and can easily access many media; free text retrieval provides access through textual queries and can perform very well on large document bases, but has very poor multimedia capabilities. The paper then goes on to discuss a hybrid between these two traditional fields of information retrieval in an attempt to improve access to information held on document bases and in particular to provide access to non-textual document by query. User interface issues and a prototype application based on the hybrid model are discussed at the end of the paper.
